Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem that can be a source of frustration for both men and women. Methods of removal like waxing, shaving and tweezing provide temporary results and can leave skin irritated. Today, many are turning to advanced laser technology to treat this problem.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2016, more than 1.1 million men and women chose laser to treat unwanted hair making it one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the country. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions:

Am I a good candidate for laser hair treatment?

Typically, patients with a combination of lighter skin tone and darker hair get the best results.

What parts of my body can be treated?

The most common areas for women are the chin, upper lip, under arms, legs and the bikini line. For the men, it’s the back.

What causes my hair to grow?

Heredity and ethnic background are the primary influencers of hair growth. Excessive hair growth can result from biological changes like puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Other causes include certain medications, stress and hormonal problems.

How does the laser work?

The laser emits a light at a specific wavelength that is absorbed by the pigment (color) in the hair follicle – damaging the follicle and inhibiting future hair growth. Hairs become thinner and lighter in color, and some completely disappear. Repeated treatments are usually needed for best results.

Why does it take multiple treatments?

Your hair grows in cycles – when some hairs are active, others are dormant. During the active phase, the hair has enough pigment to absorb the laser energy and disable the follicle. In the dormant phase, there is not enough pigment to absorb the light. Over a period of time, those dormant hairs become active and can be treated.

How many treatments will I need?

It will vary with every patient, but you should see results in 6-8 treatments. Patients are normally seen every 4-8 weeks. About 10% – 25% reduction in growth can be expected with each treatment.

Periodic maintenance treatments may be needed.

Is the laser treatment painful?

Everybody’s pain tolerance is different. Many people have described the sensation as a rubber band snapping against the skin. If you find it uncomfortable, a topical numbing cream can be applied.

Is any recovery time needed?

No. You can return to work the same day. You may experience some redness, but this can be treated with recovery ointment.

Is it safe?

As with any treatment, there are potential risks including burns, scars and infection. These risks will be discussed during your consultation. Be sure your physician is part of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery. This means they have been trained and certified in this highly technical field of dermatology.

Does the appearance of your chin bother you? You’re not alone. According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 68% of people surveyed reported that they are bothered by excess fat beneath their chin, also known as submental fullness.

The cause of submental fullness differs from person to person but common culprits include: genetics, weight gain and aging. Unfortunately for many, excess fat beneath the chin remains even with exercise and weight loss. Kybella®, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment, offers a nonsurgical option for improving the appearance of moderate fat beneath the chin.

How Does It Work?

Kybella® dissolves fat cells with a molecule already found naturally in the body, deoxycholic acid, which aids in breaking down dietary fat. Once injected, Kybella® destroys fat cells, rendering them unable to store or accumulate fat. The destroyed fat cells dissolve and become metabolized by the body.

How Many Treatments Do You Need?

The number of recommended Kybella® treatments varies from patient to patient and depends upon two major factors: (1) the amount of fat already present beneath the chin and (2) the desired profile a patient and their injector plan to achieve. Patients who receive Kybella® should plan on two to six treatments.*

How Long Does Kybella® Last?

Once you reach your desired aesthetic through injections, further treatment is not expected. The fat cells destroyed by the deoxycholic acid in Kybella® cannot store or accumulate fat, they leave the body after they are metabolized.

Am I A Good Candidate for Kybella?

The best way to know if you are a good candidate for Kybella® is to schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon. At your initial consultation, your plastic surgeon will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for Kybella®. If you are not a good candidate for Kybella®, there may be other options for you.

Who Performs the Treatment?

At Soderstrom Skin Institute our plastic surgeons, Dr. James M. Jeffries III, MD, FACS and Dr. Eric Lomax, MD, FACS, perform Kybella® treatments.

What are the Side Effects?

Kybella® injection constitutes a medical procedure, and, as with all medical procedures, side effects may apply. The most common side effects include, without limitation, swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area, but some other serious side effects are possible. Recently, we shared a time lapse video on social media of a patient receiving JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC lip injections at our Peoria office. The patient, Ann, also works as a Cosmetic Nurse at Soderstrom Skin Institute. As a nurse injector, Ann administers JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injections on a regular basis. We sat down with Ann to learn more about her experience on both sides of JUVÉDERM® injections.

web.JuvedermBeforeZoomWhat is JUVÉDERM®?

Ann: JUVÉDERM® is a dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid – a natural substance in the skin that adds nutrients and helps the skin keep its softness and moisture. JUVÉDERM® is used to add volume to facial tissue (including lips) to create a smoother and fuller appearance of the skin. In the time lapse video, we used JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, which is used for injection lips and perioral area (the tissue around the lips) for lip augmentation.

Who usually receives JUVÉDERM®?

Ann: JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is for anyone who wants fuller lips. Some people want a fuller upper lip, some want a fuller lower lip and others want just a subtle enhancement. Many patients want enough of an enhancement that they notice the difference but not so much of a change that others to know that they had lip injections (no duckface or sausage lips!) A subtle change or a dramatic change is possible with JUVÉDERM® injections. Before you receive injections, it’s important to talk with your provider about your desired outcome from the procedure.

JUVÉDERM® is also commonly used to treat volume loss in the lower third of the face including the nasal labial folds (wrinkles around the corners of the nose and mouth), marionette lines, mental crease (on the chin and vertical lines (also known as smokers lines). JUVÉDERM® can also be used to treat asymmetry. As we age, changes that occur on the face often do not happen symmetrically or synchronously. One side of the face may receive more damage from sun exposure or even sleeping on one side of the face more than the other.

How was your experience receiving JUVÉDERM® lip injections?

Ann: The procedure and recovery time are relatively short and my nurse injector did a great job with the injections to help me accomplish the look I was hoping for!

Individual results may vary.

Was it painful?

Ann: I experienced little discomfort with my injections. My cosmetic injector applied a topical numbing cream 10 minutes before my injections. JUVÉDERM® also has lidocaine in its formulation to minimize discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

Ann: It varies from patient to patient and procedure to procedure. Commonly experienced side effects include temporary symptoms like redness, pain or tenderness at the injection side, itching, firmness, swelling, bruises, discoloration, and lumps. Some patients will experience side effects that are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration lasts 7 to 14 days. Like any injection procedure, there is also a risk for skin infection.

Most patients who receive JUVÉDERM® receive instant results with little to no down time*– they walk out of the office without anyone knowing that they just received the procedure. You can apply makeup immediately after the procedure is complete and go about the rest of your day. Many patients experience numbness at the injection site for approximately 30 minutes.*

How long does the procedure take?

Ann: The length of the procedure varies from person to person, depending on the amount of injection they receive and the look they want to accomplish. In my procedure, it took 10 minutes for the numbing cream to fully activate and the actual injection took another 10 minutes.*

How long does the treatment last?

Ann: Up to one year.*

Individual results may vary.

What would you say to someone considering the procedure?

Ann: JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC can be a great outcome if you do your homework and articulate your desired outcome with your physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or cosmetic nurse injector. We are fortunate that there are minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures like JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, to help people look and feel younger and prettier.

My esthetic goals were to accomplish fuller lips and to correct my smile. Everyone has different cosmetic and esthetic goals – our providers listen to your goals and make suggestions as needed to help you accomplish your vision for fuller lips. Lips are personal, which is why we develop individualized treatment plans for each of our patients at Soderstrom Skin Institute. As a nurse injector, I want to give my patients the best result possible – I am happy when my patients are happy.

If you want to enhance your lips, I recommend setting up an appointment with a professional (like the professionals at Soderstrom Skin Institute) to learn more about the procedure and to talk though your goals and options.

Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem that can be a source of distress and frustration for men and women. Methods such as waxing, shaving and tweezing yield temporary results and can leave skin irritated. Today, many are turning to advanced laser technology to treat this problem.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is the only process proven to provide long term reduction of unwanted hair. The most commonly targeted areas of the body are the chin, upper lip, under arms, legs and bikini line.

The laser hair removal process targets laser beams of light onto the skin, penetrating through the skin with a light/heat effect on the hair follicle. After this process, hairs treated with the laser beam are thinner and lighter in color, and some completely disappear.*

Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The average patient requires several treatments and periodic maintenance visits for upkeep. The number of required treatments varies from patient to patient and depends on each individual’s response to the process. Typically, patients with a combination of light skin and dark hair respond best to laser treatments. Those with darker skin can attempt laser removal, but in certain instances the laser has been known to affect the melanin of the skin. Laser hair removal does not successfully treat white, blonde or grey hair but medical experts continue to investigate new processes to treat patients with unwanted facial and body hair.

What You Should Know

Results vary from patient to patient, but generally:

  • The percentage of hairs removed each session varies by location on the body. – Thinner-skinned areas (like armpits and the bikini area) generally respond better than thick-skinned areas (like the back and chin).
  • Approximately 10-25 percent reduction in hair growth can be expected with each treatment.
  • Treatments are repeated every 4-8 weeks.
  • The hair that may regrow following treatments tends to be lighter and finer in texture.
  • Patients are instructed to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and to avoid sun exposure following the procedure.

In the age of the “selfie,” we have come to realize that there is flattering angle for photos and a not so flattering angle. Well, chin up! The solution to that dreaded double chin has arrived. Introducing Kybella®!

For those who suffer from the frustration of trying to lose fat below the chin, Kybella® is a beauty breakthrough. Kybella® is an FDA approved injectable substance designed to destroy fat cells. It’s made from a fat-eliminating deoxycholic acid found naturally in our bodies. When injected into the skin, fat cells are destroyed so they can’t re-accumulate, making Kybella® treatments effective for the long term despite future weight gain.

Patients who receive Kybella® should plan on two to six treatments*, each taking about 20 minutes and spaced one month apart. Unlike liposuction, Kybella injections are quick, non-surgical and typically cost less in terms of money and recovery time.*

A shot that zaps fat sounds too good to be true, right? That’s why we’re inviting you to try Kybella® and experience this innovative procedure for yourself. If you’ve tried dieting and you’ve tried exercise, it may be time to find out if Kybella® could help you finally say goodbye to that double chin.

Kybella® destroys fat cells and reduces the appearance of fat below the chin.

This is an in-office procedure done by our highly skilled board certified plastic surgeons. A few tiny injections of the product are administered to the submental fat under the chin. Some swelling and tenderness is expected for a few days.* Prior to treatment we make you feel comfortable with a numbing solution and/or ice. A follow up appointment is scheduled in a few weeks, and 2nd treatment is scheduled as needed.* Optimal results are seen typically with two visits.*

Your Plastic Surgeon will determine this at your initial consultation. If you are not a good candidate for Kybella®, there may be other options for you.

One of the most incredible discoveries in dermatology over the past twenty years has been the use of laser light for effective skin rejuvenation.

Whether it’s the damaging rays of the sun, lifestyle choices (such as smoking) environmental pollutants or stress – they all effect the health, color and texture of the skin. The outcome can lead to premature aging including facial wrinkles, irregular skin tones, blotchiness, brown spots and rough “leathery” patches. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2014 over 543,000 men and women decided to have facial laser resurfacing to help reverse the signs of aging.

Do you have a big event coming up soon – maybe a wedding or reunion? Imagine walking in looking and feeling years younger!

Water in skin cells is absorbed by specific laser light. The laser energy heats up the water causing the evaporation of the affected tissue. Some heat is also absorbed by adjacent tissue. This causes tiny “injuries” to the surface and thermal stimulation of the deeper skin layers. The body’s natural healing process then replaces the damaged skin with new and healthy tissue.

Considered to be the gold standard in laser rejuvenation, the CO2 Fractional Laser provides skin resurfacing, deep collagen restructuring, a short healing phase and minimal downtime – at lower cost than 3-5 more superficial laser treatments. Known as the “weekend peel” it provides cost effectiveness, convenience and results.

There are many reasons why women may consider breast enhancement surgery. Factors such as weight gain/loss, illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, irregular shape and size, sagging and cancer are just a few situations that can influence this decision.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2014, more than 286,000 women decided to have breast enhancement surgery making it the #1 cosmetic surgical procedure in the country.

During this initial meeting it is important that your plastic surgeon understands your goals and desires.  Health issues, potential risks and expectations should be discussed. It is important to have open communication so the surgeon can determine the most appropriate options for the patient. Moving forward there are several options to discuss including the type of incision, implant placement, plus implant type, size, shape and surface.
