Recently, we shared a time lapse video on social media of a patient receiving JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC lip injections at our Peoria office. The patient, Ann, also works as a Cosmetic Nurse at Soderstrom Skin Institute. As a nurse injector, Ann administers JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injections on a regular basis. We sat down with Ann to learn more about her experience on both sides of JUVÉDERM® injections.

web.JuvedermBeforeZoomWhat is JUVÉDERM®?

Ann: JUVÉDERM® is a dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid – a natural substance in the skin that adds nutrients and helps the skin keep its softness and moisture. JUVÉDERM® is used to add volume to facial tissue (including lips) to create a smoother and fuller appearance of the skin. In the time lapse video, we used JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, which is used for injection lips and perioral area (the tissue around the lips) for lip augmentation.

Who usually receives JUVÉDERM®?

Ann: JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is for anyone who wants fuller lips. Some people want a fuller upper lip, some want a fuller lower lip and others want just a subtle enhancement. Many patients want enough of an enhancement that they notice the difference but not so much of a change that others to know that they had lip injections (no duckface or sausage lips!) A subtle change or a dramatic change is possible with JUVÉDERM® injections. Before you receive injections, it’s important to talk with your provider about your desired outcome from the procedure.

JUVÉDERM® is also commonly used to treat volume loss in the lower third of the face including the nasal labial folds (wrinkles around the corners of the nose and mouth), marionette lines, mental crease (on the chin and vertical lines (also known as smokers lines). JUVÉDERM® can also be used to treat asymmetry. As we age, changes that occur on the face often do not happen symmetrically or synchronously. One side of the face may receive more damage from sun exposure or even sleeping on one side of the face more than the other.

How was your experience receiving JUVÉDERM® lip injections?

Ann: The procedure and recovery time are relatively short and my nurse injector did a great job with the injections to help me accomplish the look I was hoping for!

web.JuvedermRightAfterZoom

Individual results may vary.

Was it painful?

Ann: I experienced little discomfort with my injections. My cosmetic injector applied a topical numbing cream 10 minutes before my injections. JUVÉDERM® also has lidocaine in its formulation to minimize discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

Ann: It varies from patient to patient and procedure to procedure. Commonly experienced side effects include temporary symptoms like redness, pain or tenderness at the injection side, itching, firmness, swelling, bruises, discoloration, and lumps. Some patients will experience side effects that are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration lasts 7 to 14 days. Like any injection procedure, there is also a risk for skin infection.

Most patients who receive JUVÉDERM® receive instant results with little to no down time – they walk out of the office without anyone knowing that they just received the procedure. You can apply makeup immediately after the procedure is complete and go about the rest of your day. Many patients experience numbness at the injection site for approximately 30 minutes.

How long does the procedure take?

Ann: The length of the procedure varies from person to person, depending on the amount of injection they receive and the look they want to accomplish. In my procedure, it took 10 minutes for the numbing cream to fully activate and the actual injection took another 10 minutes.

How long does the treatment last?

Ann: Up to one year.

Individual results may vary.

What would you say to someone considering the procedure?

Ann: JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC can be a great outcome if you do your homework and articulate your desired outcome with your physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or cosmetic nurse injector. We are fortunate that there are minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures like JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, to help people look and feel younger and prettier.

My esthetic goals were to accomplish fuller lips and to correct my smile. Everyone has different cosmetic and esthetic goals – our providers listen to your goals and make suggestions as needed to help you accomplish your vision for fuller lips. Lips are personal, which is why we develop individualized treatment plans for each of our patients at Soderstrom Skin Institute. As a nurse injector, I want to give my patients the best result possible – I am happy when my patients are happy.

If you want to enhance your lips, I recommend setting up an appointment with a professional (like the professionals at Soderstrom Skin Institute) to learn more about the procedure and to talk though your goals and options.

Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem that can be a source of distress and frustration for men and women. Methods such as waxing, shaving and tweezing yield temporary results and can leave skin irritated. Today, many are turning to advanced laser technology to treat this problem.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is the only process proven to provide long term reduction of unwanted hair. The most commonly targeted areas of the body are the chin, upper lip, under arms, legs and bikini line.

The laser hair removal process targets laser beams of light onto the skin, penetrating through the skin with a light/heat effect on the hair follicle. After this process, hairs treated with the laser beam are thinner and lighter in color, and some completely disappear.

Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The average patient requires several treatments and periodic maintenance visits for upkeep. The number of required treatments varies from patient to patient and depends on each individual’s response to the process. Typically, patients with a combination of light skin and dark hair respond best to laser treatments. Those with darker skin can attempt laser removal, but in certain instances the laser has been known to affect the melanin of the skin. Laser hair removal does not successfully treat white, blonde or grey hair but medical experts continue to investigate new processes to treat patients with unwanted facial and body hair.

What You Should Know

Results vary from patient to patient, but generally:

  • The percentage of hairs removed each session varies by location on the body. – Thinner-skinned areas (like armpits and the bikini area) generally respond better than thick-skinned areas (like the back and chin).
  • Approximately 10-25 percent reduction in hair growth can be expected with each treatment.
  • Treatments are repeated every 4-8 weeks.
  • The hair that may regrow following treatments tends to be lighter and finer in texture.
  • Patients are instructed to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and to avoid sun exposure following the procedure.

In the age of the “selfie,” we have come to realize that there is flattering angle for photos and a not so flattering angle. Well, chin up! The solution to that dreaded double chin has arrived. Introducing Kybella®!

For those who suffer from the frustration of trying to lose fat below the chin, Kybella® is a beauty breakthrough. Kybella® is an FDA approved injectable substance designed to destroy fat cells. It’s made from a fat-eliminating deoxycholic acid found naturally in our bodies. When injected into the skin, fat cells are destroyed so they can’t re-accumulate, making Kybella® treatments effective for the long term despite future weight gain.

Patients who receive Kybella® should plan on two to six treatments, each taking about 20 minutes and spaced one month apart. Unlike liposuction, Kybella injections are quick, non-surgical and typically cost less in terms of money and recovery time.

A shot that zaps fat sounds too good to be true, right? That’s why we’re inviting you to try Kybella® and experience this innovative procedure for yourself. If you’ve tried dieting and you’ve tried exercise, it may be time to find out if Kybella® could help you finally say goodbye to that double chin.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Kybella® destroys fat cells and reduces the appearance of fat below the chin.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
This is an in-office procedure done by our highly skilled board certified plastic surgeons. A few tiny injections of the product are administered to the submental fat under the chin. Some swelling and tenderness is expected for a few days. Prior to treatment we make you feel comfortable with a numbing solution and/or ice. A follow up appointment is scheduled in a few weeks, and 2nd treatment is scheduled as needed. Optimal results are seen typically with two visits.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR KYBELLA®?
Your Plastic Surgeon will determine this at your initial consultation. If you are not a good candidate for Kybella®, there may be other options for you.

WHAT IS THE COST?

One of the most incredible discoveries in dermatology over the past twenty years has been the use of laser light for effective skin rejuvenation.

Whether it’s the damaging rays of the sun, lifestyle choices (such as smoking) environmental pollutants or stress – they all effect the health, color and texture of the skin. The outcome can lead to premature aging including facial wrinkles, irregular skin tones, blotchiness, brown spots and rough “leathery” patches. According to the

American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2014 over 543,000 men and women decided to have facial laser resurfacing to reverse the signs of aging.

Do you have a big event coming up soon – maybe a wedding or reunion? Imagine walking in looking and feeling years younger!

FACIAL LASER RESURFACING – HOW IT WORKS

Water in skin cells is absorbed by specific laser light. The laser energy heats up the water causing the evaporation of the affected tissue. Some heat is also absorbed by adjacent tissue. This causes tiny “injuries” to the surface and thermal stimulation of the deeper skin layers. The body’s natural healing process then replaces the damaged skin with new and healthy tissue.

THE CO2 FRACTIONAL LASER

Considered to be the gold standard in laser rejuvenation, the CO2 Fractional Laser provides skin resurfacing, deep collagen restructuring, a short healing phase and minimal downtime – at lower cost than 3-5 more superficial laser treatments. Known as the “weekend peel” it provides cost effectiveness, convenience and results.

There are many reasons why women may consider breast enhancement surgery. Factors such as weight gain/loss, illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, irregular shape and size, sagging and cancer are just a few situations that can influence this decision.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2014, more than 286,000 women decided to have breast enhancement surgery making it the #1 cosmetic surgical procedure in the country.

 CONSULTATION

During this initial meeting it is important that your plastic surgeon understands your goals and desires.  Health issues, potential risks and expectations should be discussed. It is important to have open communication so the surgeon can determine the most appropriate options for the patient. Moving forward there are several options to discuss including the type of incision, implant placement, plus implant type, size, shape and surface.

Age, lifestyle, genetics and metabolism all play significant roles in how and where individuals store their excess weight.  For many, stubborn fat deposits around the abdomen, chest, thighs, arms, neck and face are the most problematic areas and can be resistant to diet and exercise.

Laser Liposuction

In the last twenty years, there have been significant scientific advances in the field of body contouring including Smartlipo Triplex™. This laser liposuction treatment system is supported by eight years of clinical studies and is one of the most researched lasers systems available.

“THIS TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS FOR A SAFE AND PRECISE WAY TO REMOVE FAT DEPOSITS AND SCULPT THE BODY,” Dr. Jeffries.

How does it work?

The procedure is performed using a small tube about the size of the tip of a pen, which is inserted under the skin.  The laser delivers energy directly to the fat cells through the tube, causing them to rupture.  The liquefied fat is then gently suctioned out. This unique technology safely delivers the optimal blend of three laser wavelengths for better fat removal and enhanced tissue tightening.

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times: drinking more water is the first step to optimal health. Staying hydrated is a magical way to keep your body in check and take care of your basic functions. You’ve probably also been told that drinking a certain amount of water a day will lead to the perfect complexion we all dream about. But we need to relearn a few of the things we’ve been told.

TRUTH: Water can help with weight loss

Well, yes, but this isn’t some voodoo magic where drinking more water immediately begins to shrink fat cells. (Scientists, can we get on that?) Instead, this is a pretty obvious phenomenon. Researches have found that drinking a glass or more of water before a meal will fill your stomach up making you eat less when you sit down to dig in. It is also true that feeling hungry and feeling thirsty send the same signals to our brains. So staying consistently hydrated throughout the day will reduce the amount of times we feel the need to snack. The other piece of this is almost too obvious to mention, but I will, because we could all use the reminder: choosing water over soft drinks is one of the best ways to curb calories and lose weight.

TRUTH: Water can get rid of headaches

Dehydration is a leading cause of headaches, causing blood volume to drop and less oxygen to flow to the brain. The decreased oxygen and electrolytes in the brain produce pain signals resulting in different types of headaches. Some may recognize this sensation as a hangover, but migraine sufferers and others can be more sensitive to dehydration and experience this without drinking a bottle of wine the night before. Staying properly hydrated throughout the day is one of the best ways to be proactive in warding off unwanted headaches.

MYTH: Water prevents dry skin

While drinking water does work to flush out the toxins that clog our pores and cause acne, the idea that drinking more than 8 cups a day makes your skin look young and fresh is ultimately not true. Sure, dehydration can lead to drier skin but once you’re taking in a good amount of fluids, drinking even more isn’t going to help your complexion. Instead of surging straight to clearing up our faces, the excess water will be filtered through our kidneys as waste. The most important thing to pay attention to for flawless skin is external factors like cleansing routines and exposure to damaging sunlight. Keep drinking adequate amounts of water but don’t expect it to seep through to the outer layers of your epidermis and smooth out problem areas.
